AT WHAT AGE SHOULD A CHILD HAVE THEIR FIRST SIGHT TEST?
Reading, social skills and body-eye coordination will all benefit from having clear vision. Since children’s eyes change rapidly we recommend a preschool eye examination and regular check-ups, especially if there is a family history of eye problems.
SHOULD MY CHILD BE FITTED WITH CONTACT LENSES?
Children and teenagers can also be fitted with contact lenses even if their prescription is still changing — with disposable lenses this is no problem. The age at which a child can begin to wear lenses should be discussed with us as it will vary from child to child. Many children start with contact lenses at around the age of 7, however it is often possible to begin at an earlier age especially if there are other confident contact lens wearers in the house hold.
IS THE SCHOOL VISION SCREENING THE SAME AS AN EYE TEST?
No. Although screening may be done through schools this check is not as thorough as a full sight test and often doesn’t include a check of the health of the eyes.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD CHILDREN HAVE THEIR EYES TESTED?
We recommend that children are tested regularly until the age of 16. Prescriptions may change with a child’s physical development and the health of the eyes should be regularly assessed.
I'M ON MATERNITY LEAVE AND HAVE A CERTIFICATE, DOES THIS ENTITLE ME TO NHS EYESORE?
Unfortunately not (unless of course any of the above NHS criteria still count), however don’t let that put you off a sight test.
You’re still entitled to our special Mums Service which includes priority appointments, a little child care if needed, and great coffee too. Come in and put your feet up!
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE AN EYE TEST?
NHS eye tests are provided annually for those people aged over 70. For everyone else it will be every two years unless we decide that you should be seen sooner.
